People often ask who the Masters are. Perhaps they should start by asking themselves WHAT the Masters ARE! Or what they ultimately represent for the spiritual economy of the planet and for the destiny of humanity in general.
This would make it easier to avoid making the many common mistakes in this area. The Western aspirant has not yet acquired an adequate education in this sensitive subject. In fact, he has still been poorly informed about what spiritual mastery means and how to achieve it. The image of the Masters offered by modern esoteric societies is insufficient to portray the true magnitude and scope of the work of the Hierarchies, even those considered closest to humanity.
Certain authors have sought to convince people of the value of the Masters by appealing to their most common feelings. It is said that the Masters have many powers, that they are immortal, that they have had famous incarnations, etc.; ultimately focusing on the Master's own personality and not on everything he really has to offer to humanity. With this, it is natural to associate the Masters with doctrines that are not very objective, since faith becomes the driving force behind this approach and not truly practical information for the disciple's real growth.
Furthermore, the image of mystics and saints has been confused with Rishis and Masters, which represents a semantic error. Rishi means "seer", indicating the stage of enlightenment of the Adepts with access to the Akasha, enabling them to manifest universal knowledge and wisdom. Meanwhile, "Master" also indicates a spiritual emancipation, largely overcoming the need for the contemplative life.
The Adepts are spokespeople of the High Sciences who act as interfaces for all of humanity's knowledge. They do not work with veiled information and when they do, they leave it implicit. What does the world need? What paths should be taken? How urgent are the changes? Who can answer all of this? Only the Masters can truly do so. If people do not seek them out, they cannot complain about their problems.
In occult terms, every Master is a planetary alchemist because spiritual enlightenment powerfully affects the collective subconscious of the human species, allowing it to remain minimally balanced and common sense to be shared by humanity. People need to relearn how to activate the forces that move History - upwards, actively working with the spiritual Hierarchies. By cosmic Law, this is the only way for humanity to truly redeem and renew itself.
Of course, the manifestation of a Master is not limited to oc-cult issues alone. A good way to identify a Master is through his/her language - or his/her “rhythm” as Helena Roerich put it. A Master’s communication is classic, sober, serene and balanced. The message of mastery is original because it is above average, it does not seek to please anyone or to displease anyone. Its sole objects are the soul (or even the spirit) and the collective, and not the personality or the individual.
Ideally, true Masters do not concern themselves with the individual aspirant, but rather with the collective Plan of evolution of humanity, which is the one in which They have their consciousness. Masters can communicate directly with accepted disciples and initiates, because the latter have an easier time assimilating their commands and guidance, while the latter are better prepared to understand the material limitations of the Hierarchy on this planet. They know that the actions of a Master represent only the tip of the thread of a ball of blessings that are lost in the heavens in infinite Hierarchies of Light that are behind him.
By virtue of their office, the mystery of the Masters resembles an iceberg where only a tiny part is visible, or a cave with a narrow entrance but which hides the most unfathomable treasures. The greatness of a Master is not manifested only in his appearance but in the sum of his achievements, in his accumulated experience, in his collected knowledge and in his practical wisdom.
Talking about the Masters is often like talking about the Sun. We can study everything about it, receive all its benefits and even look at it sideways, but never for too long because this can harm us, as its power is too much for our weak constitution.
Nor do Masters act by proxy from third parties, but only in a publicly authorized manner or in a provisional manner, preparing people for their own revelation, as is the case today with the Hierarchy's Plan to prepare humanity for the New Age.
Nevertheless, when you see a Master, you must understand everything that is behind him: divine choice, obedience, renunciations, consecration, efforts, studies, austerities, sacrifices, wisdom, enlightenment, guidance... And when you see all this, you must also know that you are most likely in the presence of a Master. In this sense, it is important to know the history of the supposed Master, noting that such requirements are essential, regardless of what they may have accomplished in other lives. All great Masters were examples in these items, among others.
What is the importance of Masters? Their importance is simply capital for humanity. It so happens that the human species is still in the infancy of its spiritual evolution. Contrary to what one might imagine, mastering technology in itself means little, because without self-control, all this knowledge becomes dangerous.
The Masters therefore serve as auxiliary consciousnesses while humanity is evolving, seeking to refine this human evolution to the maximum, although this also depends greatly on the societies themselves. The key to making all this work lies in the understanding of this situation by these societies, given the enormous efforts that the Masters themselves must make to achieve their own spiritual conquests and rise to a higher plane of service and impersonality that is beyond reproach.
Since the Masters have practically no qualified interlocutors, they position themselves in this position of Master or Instructor. Each one teaches what he knows, and it is not appropriate to falsify information or usurp the role of true experts, if we want a truly better world. It is a simple question of professionalism and prerogatives. What defines a professional? For example: since when, for how long and how many hours per week someone has dedicated themselves to a certain subject. Sometimes it is worth remembering that a professional knows what laymen know, but the opposite is not true.*
A Master does not teach what people already know, but ra-ther what is unknown. If what is known were enough, the world would need little guides and things would be reasonably well. It is therefore essential to know how to distinguish between those who live in the world and investigate spirituality, and those who live in spirituality and investigate the world. No one in this world has the obligation to dedicate themselves full-time and for life to spirituality as the Masters do, but they would have the obligation to honor those rare few who do so because they are called by God, because much of the progress that the rest may need depends on them.
* Anyone who is capable of being a good professional in their own field already does a great service to humanity. After all, a good professional knows how to recognize and respect other professionals. Hence the basic premise of the Bhagavad Gita in fulfilling one's own duty, which is the only one in which a person can be truly efficient.
